Artist Statement

In the early 2000’s, my Dad used to drop my brothers and I off at Wake Forest University as he’d head off for an 8-hour work day. My brothers, both basketball players, would play on a nearby court and I would be left to my own devices.

I’d sit with myself, watch pedestrians go about their day and build make-believe worlds in my mind. I started noticing patterns and small accidents like people falling off their bike or suddenly changing direction. This time helped me discover what was interesting in the mundane and the natural interruptions that caught my eye or made me pay attention.

Influenced by those early days, I create both narrative and non-linear work, often circling themes of escapism, isolation, and a desire for connection. Lately, my focus has been on creating what I like to call virtuosic narratives. These "narratives" combine rigorous physicality with text, cinematic scores, projections, and every now and then, a shadow puppet. This combination often creates themes of nostalgia and relatability in my work.

I’m drawn to continuous, unfolding phrases that emphasize momentum, weight shift, and changes in direction. I’m inspired by contemporary choreographers including Larry Keigwin (Keigwin + Co), Maxine Doyle (Sleep No More) and Fernando Melo (Visceral Dance Chicago) as well as the work of modern dance pioneers like José Limón. Connected to these artists, I’m interested in continuing my research into how bodies navigate gravity, misdirections and falling through space to tell clearer stories through my own movement language.

“I always go into a work thinking it will be one thing and it completely evolves and changes by the end. I get inspired by the people in and it allows my work to become ours when we share it.”
